Slow Websites Cost Money

Posted on 10 March 2009 | by Ryan Battles

According to recent research, a website that loads slowly will not only annoy visitors, but cause rankings in Google to fall. Because many visitors will find a website based on Google search results, this loss of traffic will cost website owners money. The research has shown that a page that loads a half second slower than another can experience a drop in traffic by 20%. This effect also occurs in Google AdWords, where keywords are now given a score based on the landing page's load time. What this means is that a competitor can pay less, but have higher rankings because their page loads quicker. What follows are some steps to take to make a faster-loading website:

  • Separate CSS and JavaScript out of the HTML file
  • Optimize ALL images for the web by customizing their compression and quality. Photoshop has a great tool for doing this.
  • Consider combining images into "sprite" files.
  • If using a CMS, research caching capabilities and methods for speeding up the processing.
  • Research faster hosting solutions

If any of that sounded foreign to you, perhaps we can help you out with optimizing your current website for the fastest possible load time. Contact Us for more information.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That’s a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don’t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.

slow websites do cost money as people don't like to hang around for slow loading sites. A fast website has become even more important now google places emphasis on faster loading sites, this makes design all that more important trying to balance speed and appearance.

I have to agree with this topic. Personally, I dont have the patience to wait if the website is taking too long to load. The design doesnt have to take so long to load in order to be catchy. The more direct to the point it is. The more it'll have a number of visit.
